When in Doubt

What if silence
Had its own distinctive tone –
The sombre hum of a barrenness
you can run your fingers through?

Would you reach out –
take in
the monotone of darkness,
breathe in the deafening
uncertainty of undeclared surrender?

Would you attempt to laugh it off –
shredding its leaden shroud
with beams of joyous noise
too loud to wilfully ignore?

What if the tone persists –
an almost graceful low pitch
tinnitus for tired ears,
What then?

Will you embrace the silence
and hold it tenderly until
it speaks to you?
